Drums Alive is the most fun you will ever have getting fit: it’s a great mix of rhythm, dance, cardio, left-right brain integration and laughter.
Central Vancouver Island is one of the only places west of the Rockies in Canada to offer Drums Alive classes. Participants have a blast drumming on fitness balls while getting aerobic exercise.
Drums Alive, which was created in Germany by Carrie Ekins (FMI: http://www.drums-alive.com/about), combines elements of traditional physical fitness programs with the benefits to the brain of music and rhythms. It joins the dynamic movements of aerobic dance with the pulsating rhythms of the drum and is a unique sensory/motor program that is designed to give the mind and body instant feedback through continuous movement and rhythmical flow. It is a program that utilizes “whole brain – whole body” thinking - it fosters a healthy balance physically, mentally, emotionally and socially.
The physiological and psychological benefits of taking Drums Alive classes are numerous:
Rhythm and movement in the form of drumming and dance have been used throughout history for raising energy, celebrating, and providing a sense of community.
Research shows that dancing reduces stress and depression, and increases energy, improves flexibility, strength, balance and endurance. It strengthens bones and boosts cardiovascular health as well as reducing the risk of dementia.
Research also shows that drumming improves the neurological connection between the 2 brain hemispheres and creates new neural pathways. It also stimulates Alpha brain wave activity which can lead to higher levels of concentration, sensory/motor improvement, and an overall sense of well being. Drummers produce a natural “high” when playing together, heightening both their happiness and their pain thresholds.
Drums Alive enhances your health, improves memory and brainpower by using cross-coordinated movements and makes you happy: it's movement therapy with music, sound and dance that is perfect training for the whole body!
Monica Hofer is your local facilitator of rhythm-based events on Central Vancouver Island; she facilitates Drums Alive classes and also teaches African Drumming to all levels and is a certified instructor in HealthRhythms.
